The Approximate Man is a project by TDK, developed in collaboration with Metaart Foundation and the Bulgarian Ministry of Culture, exploring the transformation of poetry into a live musical experience.
The project takes its conceptual starting point from “The Approximate Man” by Tristan Tzara – a text that became a key trigger for the band’s latest artistic direction. Rather than treating the poem as a static reference, TDK reinterprets it through sound, structure, and performance, translating its fragmented and paradoxical nature into a contemporary musical language.
The project unfolded through a series of three concerts-two held at the National Student House and one at Bee Bop Cafe-all of which were fully sold out. Each performance was conceived as a distinct experience, with specially prepared sets that did not overlap, allowing the project to evolve across different spaces and audiences.
A central element of the project is the release of a 12-inch vinyl record, featuring original compositions inspired by the poem. The record was produced using “eco-mix” vinyl-a sustainable approach that reuses fragments from previous pressings-aligning the physical object with contemporary environmental practices in music production.
The concerts were also fully documented on video, with the intention of extending the project beyond the live moment. The visual approach emphasizes contrast and tension-between intimacy and scale, structure and spontaneity-echoing the dualities present both in Tzara’s text and in TDK’s sound, where contemporary noise-driven aesthetics intersect with more melodic and performative elements.
Through this project, Metaart Foundation supports the development of independent artistic practices, providing a platform for experimentation and cross-disciplinary expression. At the same time, The Approximate Man contributes to expanding the audience of the band by creating content that can circulate both locally and internationally. The project culminated in the creation of a 13-minute mastodon, called ZHVK
